It receives its name from the poison-dart frogs that are abundant on this island. If you're lucky enough you might encounter a three-toed sloth or some monkeys as well.

With 5 kms of pristine powdery golden sand and very little development, Bluff Beach is a favorite amongst those looking to experience their own private stretch of beautiful, raw beach.
When the swell is up, it really isn't suitable for bathing as it is directly exposed to the surf, but at low tide you can sometimes find tranquil tidal pools. There are a couple of full service restaurants and beach loungers for those who arrive earlier in the day. Check out the afternoon barbecue for some delicious lunch options.

While motor boats are a great way to explore the region, sailing is one of the most enchanting ways to explore the vast archipelago in comfort and style. Tour activities range from basic snorkeling to the more adventurous "deep boarding".
Key points of interest include Dolphin Bay, Hospital Point, Bird Island, Coral Key and the Zapatilla Islands.
We recommend the following operators and suggest that you visit their websites for more info: Bocas Sailing, Jager Knights Tours, Dragon Tours and Deep Board Under Sea.
The reefs of Bocas Del Toro in Panama have some of the best preserved hard and soft coral in the world. Bocas del Toro is home to 95% of the coral species found in the Caribbean Sea.
These waters are inhabited by a wonderful variety of tropical reef creatures including nurse sharks, stingrays and many species of crab and lobster. Besides all the colorful tropical coral, when diving you may see spotted drum, snapper, rat fish, sea horses, moray eels, nurse sharks, sea turtles, rays, vase sponges, starfish, lobster, the list goes on and on.
Diving conditions are excellent year round, especially for training, with the best times to scuba dive being February, March, May, September and October – during these months sea conditions are flatter allowing access to more remote dive sites. Regional visibility peaks during the Caribbean's Dry Season: from February to April and during September and October.
We recommend Bocas Dive Center and La Buga Dive.
Bocas del Toro offers two seasons for surf. The main season from December to April offers a variety of wave heights. But the surf typically stays in the head high range and can get up to double overhead. The mini season consists of July and August and is known for its medium sized conditions. There are three main islands that offer reefs breaks, point breaks and a couple pumping beach breaks.
Main Island of Isla Colon has a few great waves to choose from. Paunch is a fun reef break with 3 different peaks and rights and lefts. This break can be accessed by land or sea. Playa Bluff is a very hollow fast and tubular wave that breaks in very shallow sand about 10 yards from the beach. It is a very good wave but should only be left to the expert and kamikaze surfers.
Isla Carenero, home to the famous Carenero point break is the small island located between Isla Bastimentos and Isla Colon. Carenero has an outside left reef that is a very good wave for experienced surfers. Black Rock Point is a fun wave for anyone trying to better their surf ability or just learning the ropes. It is a favorite of the surf schools here in Bocas to take people to learn or someone who surfs only a few times a year.
Located on Isla Bastimentos Wizard Beach offers up some fun crystal clear beach break waves in a jungle setting. These waves are fun when the surf is smaller. Further down Isla Bastimentos is Red Frog Beach which also has a fun beach break out back when the conditions are right. If other spots are looking rough, Red Frog may offer some cover and be a cleaner option.
For a more detailed overview of the Bocas surf scene, check out Island Path Panama. Local conditions can be found on the Stormrider Surf Guide.
If you are interested in lessons, we recommend Escuela del Mar Surf School and Caribe Surf School.
The secluded Caribbean coast of Bocas del Toro is wild and relatively untouched, which is what makes fishing these waters so remarkable!
The sub-sea topography of the region is quite extreme, as water depths can exceed 2,000 feet just five miles offshore. Fishing conditions are best from March to May and September to mid November.
Seasonal offshore runs include yellowfin, blackfin, and bigeye tuna, wahoo, kingfish and big yellowtail snapper. Resident bottom fish in these waters consist of various grouper species, and snapper including cuberas, grays, dogs, blacks and muttons.
For the sports fisherman there are sailfish, blue and black marlin, shark, barracuda, red snapper and snook. Tarpon fishing in Tranquilo Bay is world class and provides the best sport fishing we have to offer.

There are two great snorkelling areas off Isla Solarte.
Hospital Point is at the north end of Isla Solarte, just a 5-minute boat ride from Bocas Town. A shallow sandy bay with about 2 meters of water, it is a good site to learn and practice beginning open-water skills. The coral wall has numerous caverns and some dark overhanging ledges that are home to a wide variety of marine life.
Coral Garden is on the west side of Isla Solarte, which boasts some of the healthiest corals in the region. From about April to June, you may get a glimpse of Hawksbill and Green turtles. This site is also known as Grandma’s Garden and its depth ranges from 4 to 18 meters.

Here you'll find the only known nesting place in the Caribbean of the Red-billed Tropicbird. This island is a rocky formation, with a rounded quarter moon shape, pierced by two openings through one end. On the southern side, sheltered from the northeastern trade winds, is a small sandy beach below.
Bushes and other vegetation cover the summit, and there is a small clump of coconut palms at the low end. A designated bird sanctuary, Isla Pajaros, also has the brown booby, the brown pelican, the frigate and many types of gulls and terns.
Offers guests the flexibiity to enjoy paradise on their own terms with a private boat and guide! Visit the key spots including Dolphin Bay, Coral Key, the Zapatilla Islands and Red Frog Beach. This tour lasts about 8 hours and the cost is $140 USD (per room). You may choose a variety of activities such as snorkeling, island treks, beach stops and an opportunity to see dolphins, sloths, monkeys, rare birds and other forms of marine life in their natural habitat.

One of the top attractions in the region, this is home to a semi-permanent population of Bottlenose dolphins. Its calm waters and abundance of small fish, crustaceans and squid seem to make the perfect grounds for the young ones' first stages of life.
Calves and juveniles can be frequently spotted with their mothers, as well as small pods of 5 or 6 dolphins.
It is common to spot some dolphins graciously playing around. Visit early in the day to avoid the afternoon crowd of boats.
One of the most famous snorkeling spots in Bocas del Toro, Coral Key is a tiny island located in the channel between Bastimentos and Popa Island, about 20 minutes by boat from Bocas Town. It is surrounded by lush coral gardens, the best of which begin just after the south-eastern tip of Bastimentos Island (make sure your boat driver takes you there, and not just to where the restaurants are).
The sea here is calm year-round, which make it suitable for snorkelers of all ages, and the abundance of tropical fish, coral heads and colorful sponges will keep experienced divers entertained as well. On the typical Caribbean day with lots of sunshine and light blue skies, the waters of Coral Key are of luminous emerald green shades and make the perfect holiday postcard.
There are three restaurants on this cay built on stilts over the water, so most visitors will order some fresh sea food before heading out to snorkel and in this way a delicious meal will be awaiting for them once they're back.
Located on the south-eastern border of the Bastimentos National Marine Park, two stunning islands emerge from a coral platform and are surrounded by tropical coral reef. The Zapatilla Islands are generally considered the most beautiful islands of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago and offer visitors pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters and attractive coral reefs.
The eastern island is home to the ranger station, where a $10 Park Fee is collected from visitors ($3 for Panamanians). The best snorkeling and diving can be found towards the south-eastern coast, about 300 meters from the beach in a spot known as Coral Islands. This spot is relatively shallow and has the most beautiful coral formations with lots of tropical fish, and its crevices hide many lobsters, crabs, eels and an immense amount of tiny sea invertebrates. If the sea permits (mainly May, September, October), you'll find a wall formed by the reef, that contains small caves and tunnels, up to 40 feet deep.
All of the beaches on the islands are excellent for swimming, and there is a rough 45-minute nature trail that makes its way through mangrove swamp. With some difficulty, you can complete the circuit through the center of the island and return along the beach.
